The Sinal-ing Festival is an annual event that takes place from February 8 to 11, celebrating the Masaling barangay fiesta and honoring the Virgin of Lourdes. The festival gets its name from the term “Sinal-ing,” which is a tribute to the origin of the Barangay Masaling’s name.
Legend has it that before the village was inhabited, it was known for being home to various migratory birds, particularly the scaled-breasted munia, also known as “Sal-ing.” As the locals needed a unique name for the place, they decided to call it Masaling, which translates to “Home of Sal-ing” or “a place abundant with Sal-ing.”
The Sinal-ing festival serves as a re-enactment of the village’s naming story, focusing on the significance of the bird. During the festival, participants showcase different costumes that represent the Sal-ing bird, from elaborate headdresses to detailed outfits that extend all the way down to their toes.
This year’s event featured 7 entries, each representing a different Purok. Among them, Tribu Pagaspas of Purok 5 stood out as the winner with their vibrant presentation. Their performance during the street dancing parade was accompanied by meticulously tailored costumes, awe-inspiring props, and flawless execution of their dance routine. In addition to being crowned the overall winner, Tribu Pagaspas also received several special awards, including Best in Street Dancing, Best in Headdress, Best in Production Design, and Best in Choreography.
